The 10 States with the Largest ↑ Increase in Diabetes Dx & 5 States with the Largest ↓ Decrease
Diagnoses of diabetes increased the most in South Dakota between 2018 and 2021 at 18.45%; diagnoses decreased the most in Hawaii at 15.61%. More, here.
Diabetes awareness website Diabetes Strong analyzed data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, comparing the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes in each state in 2018 and in 2021 (the latter is the most recent data set). The comparisons create a topline look at the current prevalence of diabetes in the US.
Spoiler: South Dakota tops the list of states with a double-digit increase over the 3 years (18.45%) and Hawaii saw the greatest decreases in diabetes diagnoses over the same period (15.61%), according to the results.
Liitations to the data: No differentiation is made between types of diabetes so there is no way to know which type/s are increasing/decreasing most; also, only adults aged 18 years and older were included so type 1 diabetes diagnoses are likely underrepresented, the majority of those being made before age 18.
