A second death in Texas resulting from the 2025 US measles outbreak was announced on April 6 by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).1 The patient was an 8-year-old girl who was hospitalized in Lubbock, TX, after testing positive for measles. The death was attributed to measles pulmonary failure by the child's health care professionals. She was not vaccinated against the highly contagious disease and had no underlying heath conditions, according to a DSHS news release.1 Daisy Hillebrand of Gaines County, TX, is the third measles-related fatality in the US this year, 2 having now been confirmed in Texas, both in school-aged children, and 1 suspected in an adult and under investigation in New Mexico.2
The Texas DSHS on April 8 reported 505 cases of measles have been identified in the state across 19 counites since late in January and 57 of those individuals have been hospitalized. The majority of the those infected were unvaccinated or of unknown vaccination status.3
In its last update, made on April 4, the CDC reported a total of 607 measles cases so far in 2025.4 That stands at more than double the number documented in 2024 (285)4 and is likely to surpass the 1274 cases reported in 2019, the most recent year when a surge in infections threatened the country's measles elimination status, declared in 2000.2 Measles outbreaks have been reported in 21 states and in New York City.
