Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship to Reduce Treatment Resistance: A CDC Guideline Topline

Commentary
Slideshow

In this at-a-glance Guideline Topline, we summarize the CDC's 2023 guidance on outpatient antimicrobial stewardship for busy primary care clinicians.

The core elements of outpatient antibiotic stewardship presented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2023 add to their guidance from 2014 for hospitals and 2015 for hospital and nursing home settings.

The CDC describes antibiotic stewardship as the effort to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by clinicians and used by patients.

"Improving antibiotic prescribing involves implementing effective strategies to modify prescribing practices to align them with evidence-based recommendations for diagnosis and management."

The following Guideline Topline slides highlight at-a-glance the 4 core elements that the CDC ascribes to outpatient antibiotic stewardship: commitment, action for policy and practice, tracking and reporting, and education and expertise.
