Which CRC Screening Method for Which Patient? Rachel Issaka, MD, MAS, Calls for an Honest Conversation

Commentary

Issaka, from the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, said insurance coverage, a patient's resources, and social determinants of health all factor in the choice.

For many patients who are eligible for colorectal cancer screening, choosing the most suitable test is straightforward, but not for all, Rachel Issaka, MD, MAS, reminded an audience of internists at the 2025 ACP Internal Medicine meeting.

An honest clinician-patient conversation about the choice will consider a patient's insurance coverage and available resources and will factor in relevant social determinants of health, Issaka said. While screening is covered under the Affordable Care Act, out-of-pocket costs can still vary—making it essential for a clinician to understand the nuances of each patient’s situation.

In this short video, part of a longer conversation with Patient Care© after her presentation at the ACP meeting on colon cancer screening and how to increase uptake, Issaka spoke in more detail about recognizing barriers to adherence with screening recommendations and how to ensure you and your patients are on the same page.
