Global humanitarian James Orbinski, MD, will deliver the Franz M. Groedel Presidential Plenary Lecture at this year's Scientific Showcase Session on Sunday, April 3. Dr Orbinski practices clinical medicine and is a research scientist at St. Michael's Hospital, University of Toronto. He is an associate professor of medicine, political science and public health at the University of Toronto and is also a senior fellow at the University of Toronto's Massey College and at the Munk Centre for International Studies. Dr Orbinski is the former international president of Doctors Without Borders and in 1999 accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on the organization's behalf.
Dr Orbinski's lecture will focus on "Global Health and Equality-Which Way Forward?" He believes that access to health care and to essential health technologies is critical to global health issues today, especially for people living in poverty. His research interests focus on access to medicines and health care, medical humanitarianism in war and social crisis and global health policy.
