Multimodal pain management expert and researcher Mariano describes the NaV1.8 inhibitor as "working in concert" with nonopioid therapies, including nerve blocks.

"I actually see [suzetrigine] as something that can work in concert with some of our available nonopioid therapies, including nerve blocks."

Edward Mariano, MD, MAS, whose research has pioneered the use of continuous peripheral nerve blocks for individuals having same-day surgery, spoke with Patient Care© recently about the January approval of the nonopioid suzetrigine for management of moderate-to-severe acute pain. Mariano, professor and vice chair in the department of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, CA, reviewed phase 3 research with the novel highly selective voltage-gated sodium channel (NaV1.8) inhibitor and offered thoughts from his perspective on one way the analgesic could be incorporated into a multimodal perioperative pain management strategy.

Edward R Mariano, MD, MAS, is a professor and vice chair in the department of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, CA and chief of anesthesiology and perioperative care service at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. Mariano pioneered the use of continuous peripheral nerve blocks for individuals having same-day surgery. He has worked on key national health care initiatives in the US including accreditation of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine fellowships, pain management guidelines, and hospital-based standards.
