Seborrheic Dermatitis of the Scalp
The entire scalp of this 1-month-old boy shows the diffuse yellow scaling of seborrheic dermatitis. Called “cradle cap” in infants, this dermatitis typically begins on the scalp during the first 3 months and may spread over the entire face. An associated stubborn diaper rash may develop in some infants.

Robert P. Blereau, MD of Morgan City, La, informs us that the dermatitis may clear spontaneously by 8 to 12 months. This child's lesions responded to gentle brushing and an antiseborrheic shampoo that is safe for children. The addition of a topical corticosteroid to this regimen may be helpful in treating persistent cradle cap.
