I have been using the finger of a non-sterile glove


Regarding "For Easier Pap Smears, Use a Condom" (August 2009, CONSULTANT), I have been using the finger of a non-sterile glove with the tip cut off as a sleeve for the speculum in obese patients with great results. The advantage of the glove over the condom is that I don’t have to worry about spermicide in the condom interfering with any tests I might need to perform. In addition, I can use a latex-free glove for my patients with latex allergies. As Dr. Breinig notes, it does a great job of retracting the lateral vaginal walls.
