Family Planning My Way: A Novel Decision Support Tool Could Change Contraceptive Counseling in Primary Care
The MyPath tool integrates reproductive goals assessment, information on pre-pregnancy health, and contraceptive decision support to help guide clinical counseling.
UC San Francisco professor of family community medicine Christine Dehlendorf, MD, MAS, has studied people's experiences of contraceptive counseling for many years, looking at ways to incorporate the patient-centered model of care into those encounters.
Her recent research has focused on how to approach patient-centered counseling around reproduction goals so that it accommodates the range of different ways that people think about childbearing in their lives.
In the following conversation with Patient Care® she highlights research on a new web-based decision support tool for use in primary care called MyPath. MyPath integrates reproductive goals assessment, information about optimizing health before pregnancy, and contraceptive decision support, providing a guide for clinicians to engage patients in meaningful dialogue centered on their needs.
