This is a congenital melanocytic lesion (also known as giant hairy nevus or giant congenital pigmented nevus). Because the incidence of melanoma may be higher in persons with these lesions, excision is often recommended. For lesions as large as this one, complete excision followed by split-thickness skin grafts in multiple sequential operations may be necessary.
