Online and Other Options for Weight-loss Support

Article

Primary care physicians can recommend a growing range of programs, online and off, designed to help patients lose weight in a healthy way, with support.

Obesity and weight loss expert Donna Ryan, MD, highlights a growing range of programs online, at YMCAs, and other venues that are designed to be convenient, affordable, and a source of support for patients looking for extra guidance while reducing or managing weight.

Dr Ryan is Professor Emerita, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University, current president of the World Obesity Federation and  associate editor of the journal Obesity.

She has been an investigator for various US National Institutes of Health-sponsored studies, including Pounds Lost, DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), DPP (Diabetes Prevention Program) and the Look AHEAD study. Dr. Ryan’s continuing interests focus on translation of effective weight management into primary care practices.
