How many high school students report current alcohol use? Are boys more likely than girls to use marijuana? Answers and more in our 5-question quiz.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published the Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary & Trends Report: 2011–2021, which monitors priority health risks and experiences among youth across the US including sexual risk behaviors, mental health, tobacco use, and more. In the 5 questions below, we focus on the update addressing substance use behaviors among high school students (grades 9-12) between 2011 and 2021. Substance use variables included the percentage of youth who drank alcohol, used marijuana, or used electronic vapor products during the past 30 days (ie, current use); the percentage of students who ever used select illicit drugs, defined as cocaine, inhalants, heroin, methamphetamines, hallucinogens, or ecstasy; and the percentage of students who misused prescription opioids (eg, Vicodin, OxyContin, Hydrocodone) either ever in their lifetime or during the past 30 days.
