The characteristic marking of the true brown recluse spider is an upside-down violin shape on the dorsal cephalothorax (A). Photographs B and C show the sequelae of a brown recluse spider bite after 5 and 10 days, respectively.

The suggested treatment regimen includes close observation of the patient, elevation and rest of the bitten area, application of ice, antibiotic therapy, and tetanus immunization.
